You are correct. Here is the protracted
discussion (laziness overcome).
Cancel write-in went from 0 (zero)
in 4.1.7 to * (asterisk) in 4.1.8. This after a brief stop
at 5 (five) during the 4.1.7-8 prereleases.
There was also a problem in 4.1.8 where 0 would still cancel. This was fixed
in 4.1.9.
Looking at 4.3, it appears that this behavior
was not merged forward correctly. This
is fixed and will be in 4.3.10.

True, this has been discussed before in the context of the
Florida VIBS Certification in rcr and in bugtrack a good bit.
I thought the VIBS Write In Cancel had been changed to use
the asterisk “ * ” key. Isn’t this key available on the
Genovation and other keypads?

bottom line was that there were/are a bunch of accounting keypads (Genovation)
in the field, so there was no separate key available to use as you
suggest. At the time I asked Piper

A character is accepted on the write-in ballot by pressing 0, yet
write-in candidate name entry is cancelled by pressing 0. Could we use
